Four boys from our Lower Sixth A Level Computer Science group travelled to the BT Headquarters in Ipswich in April to take part in the National Finals of the CoSpace Rescue League.
The CoSpace Rescue Competition is the sub-league of RoboCupJunior competition. It is available to all students aged between 8 and 18. In CoSpace Rescue, a team has to develop appropriate strategies for both real and virtual autonomous robots to navigate through the real and virtual arenas and collect objects while competing with another robot that is performing the same mission. The key to winning this competition is to use problem solving skills to write an efficient algorithm to collect more objects that the other competing team. But there is also a hefty amount of luck involved too!
The boys performed admirably well coming top in the Technical Challenge and were still in the lead after the second round. However a few unlucky turns of their robot meant that they were left in third place by the end of the competition. We wish every luck to the winning school who now go on to compete in the World Championships in Japan.
