Each year Beechen Cliff School’s Code Breaking Club take part in the National Cipher Challenge (https://www.cipherchallenge.org/). The teams performed so well this year they were invited to the internationally renowned web security company NetCraft for a workshop titled “Identity Theft for Fun & Profit!”

It was an interactive workshop where the pupils learned  many of the opportunities that exist to make catastrophic mistakes when developing and maintaining a web application on the Internet.

The  challenge was to attempt to hack a fake credit agency’s web interface holding credit information on hundreds of millions of people.
After a short tutorial outlining and illustrating the concepts, the students competed against their peers to exfiltrate as much consumer credit data as they could.

The 2 hour workshop was thrilling as well as informative & educational. All students learned new skills from the Netcraft team who were on hand and had devised a brilliant scenario to test. The NetCraft team commented that the pupils actually performed better in the scenario than cybersecurity experts from Southampton University.

Beechen Cliff would like to thank Netcraft for the evening, including the pizza and the generous prizes they supplied to the winners. The pupils cannot wait for the 2018 Cipher Challenge to open in September.
